Bringing a New Manager up to Speed The Challenge: A technology company promoted one of their key individual contributors to a managerial role. The individual was very valuable in his technical knowledge, but proved to be clueless about how to work effectively with his peers and the Directors he supported. The company decided they wanted to demote this person but retain him in an individual contributor role. The Solution: After meeting with the Manager, and interviewing peers and Directors, the coach decided that this person didn't have any concept of his new role and how he should spend his time. He also realized how willing the manager was to learn. The Results: After coaching him for three months, giving him resource materials and suggesting several short seminars, the company was astonished how quickly he developed into an effective manager. The issues that had led them consider demoting him disappeared. |
